3/365 北東南西 Compass Point On’yomi Readings

This is a quick follow up entry to the morning’s one, with the on’yomi readings for compass point kanji and one example word for each.


on’yomi: ホク
“hoku”
north, northern

北海道
ほっかいどう
“Hokkaido”
Hokkaido (the most northern island in Japan)


on’yomi: トウ
“tou”
east, eastern

中東
ちゅうとう
“chuutou”
the Middle East


on’yomi: なん / な
“nan” / “na”
south, southern

南極
なんきょく
“nankyoku”
the South Pole

西
on’yomi: セイ / サイ
“sei” / “sai”
west, western

関西
かんさい
“kansai”
Kansai – the southern-western region of Japan

Speaking of Kansai, there is a lovely little book about the Kansai dialect that I have and will be writing about later in the year.

Anyway, let’s keep our eyes open for these on’yomi and kun’yomi readings of the compass points now we know them 🙂
