Yesterday I mentioned one of the patron saints of annotranslate.
You can imagine a Robert Downey Jr. character impatiently insisting “one of implies more than one…so who’s the other?”
Clearly it is Locksleyu, of Self Taught Japanese, whose clarifying comments are a constant source of improved accuracy around the fast and loose Wild West that is annotranslate.
Whenever I see from an inbox notification that Locksleyu has commented on a post I know I will have either a correction to hastily make, or a worthy footnote to add ❤
But…if there were to be a Fairy Godmother of annotranslate it would surely be ジョッピ.
“Who is ジョッピ?” you might well ask.
ジョッピ is a fellow Brit whom I met in Japan and whose identity I would like to keep secret at least for now.
In response to the week’s drama she very kindly offered the phrase:
早く元気になるように
(はやく げんき に なる よう に)
“hayaku genki ni naru yō ni”
to get well soon
The sentiment was much appreciated.
But “one of” doesn’t just imply two…it could be three, four, or more? Are there more? ARE THERE MORE? ARE THERE MORE?
